Sixth Grade Math Bee Team
Wins the AEA 4 Math Bee

The sixth grade math bee team
came home with first place in the AEA 4 Math Bee held in Rock Valley on Saturday, March 7,
1998. Members of the team were Chris Bouwman, Josh Hansen, T. J. Helmus, Travis Van
Ginkel, and Kimberly Johnson, alternate. The team scored the best of twenty teams
competing in the event. After five individual rounds and one team round, Rock
Valley came out on top with 151 points, followed by West Lyon with 145 points and Sioux
Center with 141 points. T. J. scored three points higher than the nearest
competitor and was the top student at the Bee. Also receiving individual honors were
Chris, who came in tenth, and Josh, who came in twelfth.
The first place finish earned the team a
place at the State Math Bee in Marshalltown on May 2. Finishing ninth out of 157
students in the state competition was T.J. Helmus. Congratulations to a top-notch
group of math students!
