Students Get "Hog Wild" About Reading

Throughout the month of April,
students and staff at Starkweather Elementary participated in several "Hog Wild"
activities, beginning with a "Pig Pen Mess-Up" on April Fool's Day. The
day began with staff members switching jobs, much to the surprise of the students!
The morning was filled with a bit of craziness and lots of laughter!
Throughout the month students earned chances to
win daily "Pigtacular" drawings by reading books and passing Accelerated Reader tests. Winnings
included a ten dollar bill, a t-shirt, a pizza party, an extra recess for a class, a class
video party, a chance to be principal for an afternoon and a chance to choose a teacher to
kiss a live pig!
Other whole-school special events included a
"Pig-in-the-Blanket" Read-In, a Read and Feed Party, National Tune Out TV Week
(and pig out on books instead) and a book fair complete with a family "Pig Feed"
sponsored by the Sioux County Pork Producers.
During the busy month, students "Pigged
Out" (read and passed tests) on a total of 1,443 books!
