Brother and Sister Take First and Second Place in Geography Bee

Crayons

On Thursday, January 7, 1999, Starkweather Elementary held its annual Geography Bee.  Fourteen students from grades four through six were selected as finalists for the event.   These students were selected on the basis of their scores on a written test administered to all fourth, fifth and sixth graders.  Mr. Ortman acted as moderator in the after-school event.   After many difficult questions, sixth grader Daren Vande Vegte was declared the winner and his sister Megan, a fifth grader, was declared the runner-up.  In addition to these students, the finalists were fourth graders Emily Jespersen and Matt Richard; fifth graders Amy Demke, Aaron De Weerd, Chris Reinke and Nick Slobe; and sixth graders Coty Hallengren, Derek Harberts, Val Rau, Karin Remmerde, Mickey Richard and Dana Van Maanen.
